The Solution
The solution Olive Rose is proposing is a modular, customizable space. The foldable walls, which double as whiteboard space, allow for group space where collaboration is key. Separate work stations are also available for individuals to work on solo projects.
The Justification
The Butler Education Studio design solution was met with positive review. A feedback survey collected responses from the College of Education faculty members as well as graduate students provided both validation and further consideration. Among the favorite features mentioned were the flexible spaces, comfortable furniture, the child care area, coffee and vending machines, and the interaction with library staff in helping students learn best practices in research methodology.
“I'm in love with the ability to reconfigure furniture (i.e. fold up table flush against the wall) to accommodate the needs of many people that use the room.”
“I really like the flexibility of the space...I LOVE that the librarian is actually interacting with students and teaching/supporting them; Computers with both qual and quant software are nice resources for local and/or on-campus graduate students--might consider having these be reservable.”
Ideas for further consideration include addressing the location of the library on campus in terms of safety and lighting, a clearer vision of where the books and periodical stacks are located, and a better understanding of how the childcare option works.
“While I think this is good for lighting, it may not appeal to those who would like more privacy in the space. Also, as the library is currently located more off campus than others, it can feel less inviting to students (I had walked in that area alone when it was darker out and was not comfortable).”
“Where are the books and materials?”
“I wish I understood how the childcare option worked more. Am I leaving my kid with a complete stranger? How does that work?”
